Anthropometry What is Anthropometry? Anthropometry deals with the measurement of the human structure. The field of anthropometry is used in conjunction with biomechanics and physiology to optimise performance across a wide range of body types and sports. - Anthropometrists measure:
- Components of body build
- Body measurements and proportions
- Body Composition
- Shape and maturation
Biomechanics What is Biomechanics? Biomechanics is the study of the principles of mechanics; the branch of physics that analyses the action of forces on and within the human body. Biomechanics therefore, studies the anatomical and functional aspects of human movement. Sport biomechanics focuses on technical skill analysis through the examination of the key components of a movement. The most common method of analysis is video analysis. The biomechanist uses video to capture the movement of the athlete for analysis in slow motion. Video analysis allows the biomechanist to determine movements of the athlete that may be productive or counterproductive to the success of the skill. Successful biomechanists apply theory to practice and communicate results and findings to coaches and athletes to help improve technique. Exercise Physiology What is Exercise Physiology? Exercise physiology is the study of human energetics, and seeks to identify and quantify the optimal physiological characteristics that contribute to performance by an individual athlete in a specific sport. Physiologists objectively measure and evaluate an athlete's physiological characteristics, assisting the coach/athlete in the implementation of appropriate training programmes to improve any weaknesses identified. Using laboratory and field-testing procedures, the physiologist is able to measure an athlete’s aerobic and anaerobic power, economy of effort, strength and speed, to determine athletes’ physical strengths and weaknesses. Physical Conditioning What is Physical Conditioning? Physical conditioning involves the planning and implementation of physical preparation programmes aimed at enhancing the specific physical characteristics required to improve sport performance. Physical conditioning incorporates physical stimulus that is appropriate for the sport namely power, speed, agility, endurance, and flexibility training. This overlaps with the responsibilities of the Coach who has overall accountability of the physical, technical and psychological preparation of the athlete. However the Strength and Conditioning Specialist is an expert in developing and enhancing an athlete's physical prowess for the purpose of improving performance and reducing the incident of injury. Therefore the role of the Strength and Conditioning Specialist is to support the Coach through planning and implementing physical conditioning stimulus that complements the sport training and contributes to superior sport performance. Sports Nutrition What is Sport Nutrition? Sports nutrition services include detailed assessment of the athlete’s diet; education of athletes, parents and coaches of various aspects of nutrition and how it relates to sport; as well as a variety of dietary management strategies for problem areas identified. There is a wide range of topic areas that may be covered with an athlete. These include the following: Athlete and sports specific calculations of carbohydrate and protein requirements, assessments of micronutrient intake, pre-competition, competition and recovery nutrition strategies, fluid intake, weight loss / gain goals, food label reading, travel strategies and appropriate supermarket shopping / cooking / eating out guidelines. One of the most important aspects of sport nutrition services is follow-up. Athletes are urged to keep food diaries, and these are assessed in order to ensure that the above sports nutrition concepts are consistently being incorporated into their diets to achieve the performance benefits. Diet and lifestyle factors that may limit performance are identified and solutions to resolve these issues are put in place. Good rapport between consultant and athlete is crucial to enable successful setting and achievement of nutrition-related goals. Sport Psychology What is Sport Psychology? Sport Psychology is concerned with both the psychological factors that influence participation and performance in sport and the psychological effects derived from them. Applied sport psychology focuses on identifying and understanding psychological theories and techniques that can be applied to sport and exercise to enhance performance and personal growth of athletes. Sport psychology is useful for developing ways for managing competitive stress, control concentration, improve confidence, increase communication skills and improve team harmony. The goal of sport psychology is to learn to consistently create the ideal mental climate that unleashes those physical skills that allow athletes to maximise their performance.
