Compliance with Athlete Requirements

To maintain on a full Prime Minister’s Athlete Scholarship, athletes are required to meet the Compliance Criteria as outlined below.
Failure to meet athlete requirements during a twelve month scholarship period (1Jan - 31 Dec) will deem the recipient ineligible to apply for a scholarship for the next 12 month scholarship period in which you study unless the NZAS agrees otherwise.   

1. Academic
All study must be passed in each six-month period.

2. Progress Reports
A Progress Report must be completed for each six-month period. The due dates are:
5pm 1 July (for study commencing between January 1 – June 30)
5pm 1 December (for study commencing between July 1 – December 31).
Progress Reports must be submitted by the recipient to the New Zealand Academy of Sport North Island.

3. Anti-Doping
Attendance by a Prime Minister's Athlete Scholarship recipient at a Drug Free Sport NZ approved anti-doping seminar is required in the first twelve months in which the Prime Minister's Athlete Scholarship is awarded and once in every two consecutive years there after while still on a Prime Minister’s Athlete Scholarship.

Anti-doping seminars are held by the NZ Academy of Sport North Island and Drug Free Sport NZ twice yearly in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington. These Seminars are held to educate and inform athletes of how doping can affect their health,career and social understanding. The seminar is approx 1-2 hours long with time for any questions to be answered.

During the Anti-doping Seminar you will gain knowledge and understanding of how drug testing works including:

  • Who is subject to testing
  • What does a drug test involve
  • What are an athlete’s rights and responsibilities
  • How the Drug testing process is operated both nationally and internationally

Athlete Status
There are three different key terms you should be aware of:

Granted
Fully compliant: Athlete has met all criteria and requirements of the PM Athlete Scholarship.
Outcome: Full Fees payments made. Living Allowance payments made (if eligible).

Deferred
Non Compliant: Athlete has failed to comply with one of the athlete requirements in one six-month period. (e.g failing one paper)
Outcome:Living allowance for the next six-month period studied will be held and paid retrospectively only if all requirements are met in this next period.

Repeated or Serious Non-Compliance with Athlete Requirements
You will be placed in a debt situation, suspension situation or removed from the programme for bringing the programme into disrepute, repeated non –compliance to the athlete requirements, failing to comply with the anti-doping requirements or knowingly defrauding the programme.
