Carded Athletes
How do I become a carded athlete?
  Carding of athletes is the responsibility of the National Sports Organisations. The respective Sport determines the number of card levels, the performance criteria for each of those levels, and the number of athletes in each level; as well as the timing of athlete selection and de-selection for carding. For more information on how to become a carded athlete in your sport contact the appropriate NSO.
How are carding levels decided?
  Athletes are awarded cards by their NSOs based upon criteria specific to that sport. Each sport recognises different levels of athlete development. Most sports have identified four levels:Level 1 - World Class Level 2 - International Level 3 - Development Level 4 - Junior
What am I entitled to as a carded athlete?
  Your card gives you access to your personal entitlement of support services. Each athlete has different combinations of services available to them, based on the needs of the individual and their sport. The level of support and services is determined by the national sport organisation.
Who determines the selection (carding) and de-selection (de-carding) of athlete cards?
  Athlete carding and de-carding is determined by your respective National Sports Organisation.

An athletes carding level and carding status is periodically reviewed by the respective NSOs. Athletes will be notified by their NSOs when there is a change of carding status.It is not the responsibility of the New Zealand Academy of Sport to notify athletes if a change occurs.
What does it mean to be de-carded?
  A de-carded athlete is no longer eligible to receive support for sports science or sports medicine services accessed through the Academy but can continue to access the ACE programme for a period of up to six months.
How can I replace my card if it is lost or stolen?
  Contact your regional Academy office for information on how to attain a replacement card.
What is an IPP?
  An Individual or squad performance plan (IPP/SPP) is the outcome from a coach and athlete clarifying what is needed to achieve performance related goals.
This initiative results in many benefits, such as identifying the essential support services required, defining key measures to review the athlete’s progress, and creating a process that relies on a multi-disciplinary approach, all towards making athletes faster or score more goals than the opposition.

How do I access sport science and sports medicine services?
  Each New Zealand Academy of Sport regional operation has a list of approved sport science and sports medicine providers. Carded athletes and their coaches should contact their sport's High Performance Manager to identify which specialists are recommended for their sport.
Can I use medical and science providers that are not on the 'approved' list?
  The New Zealand Academy of Sport will only pay for services provided by approved providers. If you aren’t sure, contact your Support Services Coordinator or High Performance Manager within your sport. (or your ACE Advisor)
How do I become an approved provider of sports medicine or sport science services?
  The New Zealand Academy of Sport has specific criteria for acceptance of providers in each sports science and sports medicine discipline. Potential applicants should contact the General Manager of their New Zealand Academy of Sport regional operation.

What is the ACE Programme?
  The New Zealand Academy of Sport Athlete Career and Education (ACE) service aims to assist athletes manage their lives effectively in order to achieve sporting excellence. Carded athletes have access to an ACE Advisor who will work with the athlete on an individual basis as well as working with sports to assist athletes in areas of professional development
Who is my ACE Advisor?
  Every athlete who is carded is assigned an ACE Advisor.
Your ACE Advisor is an approved NZAS service provider. To ensure carded athletes receive the best possible service, Advisers have been chosen for their skills, experience and their understanding of the challenges athletes face in achieving a balanced approach to sporting excellence.
Why should I have an initial Athlete Performance Profile with my ACE Advisor?
  An APP (Athlete Performance Profile) serves a number of functions; firstly, as an athlete induction - during the APP session the ACE Advisor will explain the NZAS programme and can answer questions the athlete may have about the programme. Secondly, the APP session provides the ACE Adviser an opportunity get to know the athlete (and vice versa) and learn more about the athlete's sporting, educational and career aspirations. Thirdly this initial session is an opportunity to establish a platform to plan for the future.
Are ACE Advisors only interested in education and career needs?
  ACE Advisors are there to support athletes in their sporting, educational, career and other life endeavours. An ACE Advisor is a neutral person and is available to the athlete for support, to bounce ideas off, to develop 'action plans', or to address specific issues.Some circumstances may require additional professional support and the ACE Adviser can assist the athlete to access the appropriate services. ...Click Here

Who is eligible for a Prime Minister's Athlete Scholarship?
  To be eligible for a scholarship in 2008, athletes must meet their National Sport Organisation’s eligibility criteria. These criteria are negotiated with each sport annually. ...Click Here
Can I study anywhere and enrol at more than one Organisation?
  Athletes may enrol in any tertiary and vocational qualification that is approved by the NZ Qualifications Authority. The education provider (e.g. the University or Polytechnic) of the qualification must be a registered New Zealand organisation.
I have another fee paying Scholarship, how does this affect my Prime Minister’s Athlete Scholarship?
  You must inform the NZASNI of this scholarship type and any further information they may require regarding amounts. (This information should be included in the spaces provided in your 12-month application form.) The academy will help by paying ‘Top up fees’ if your ‘other fee paying scholarship’ does not meet the full required amount.

General FAQs
Can I access services in another region?
  If you are temporarily in another region, then you may access services in that region. Just contact the New Zealand Academy of Sport regional operation and ask for a list of approved providers.
What happens if I relocate to another region?
  You need to notify both your NSO and the New Zealand Academy of Sport of your change of address. Your new Region will assign an ACE Advisor to you and arrange other services as appropriate.
